ADHD Ongoing Medication Management at Caringbah Family Practice
At Caringbah Family Practice, we provide safe, ongoing support for patients with ADHD who are already under specialist care. Our Stage 1 ADHD prescribers, Dr Ivan Liu and Dr Martina Gleeson, are qualified to continue treatment for patients who are stable on their existing medication.
Key Roles of a Stage 1 ADHD Prescriber
Stage 1 prescribers focus on the continuation and management of ADHD medication. Their responsibilities include:
- Prescribing ongoing medication: Issuing prescriptions for psychostimulant medications for patients who have already been diagnosed and are stable on treatment.
- Adjusting dosages: Making minor, safe adjustments to existing medication doses when clinically appropriate.
- Switching medication types: Transitioning patients between different forms of the same medication, such as from immediate-release to slow-release versions.
- Managing stable patients: Supporting patients who are already stable on treatment without requiring a new diagnosis or specialist review for every prescription refill.
Important Considerations
To ensure safe and effective care, Stage 1 prescribing applies under the following conditions:
- Prior specialist diagnosis: Patients must already have an ADHD diagnosis made by a specialist.
- Age requirements:The program applies to patients aged 6 years and older.
- Stability on treatment:Patients must be stable on their current medication to be eligible for ongoing prescriptions from a Stage 1 GP.
- Regular reviews: Patients should attend an in-person review at least every six months with their GP or a specialist to ensure continued safety and efficacy of their treatment.
Supporting Your ADHD Care
At Caringbah Family Practice, our GPs are dedicated to providing continuity, convenience, and safety for patients managing ADHD medication. We work closely with specialists and allied health professionals to ensure your care remains coordinated and consistent, giving you confidence in your ongoing treatment plan.
To access this service, you will need to be a regular patient of Caringbah Family Practice (CFP). This means that if you currently attend another medical centre, you will need to transfer your medical records to our practice. You’ll also need to register CFP as your preferred medical practice under MyMedicare—our friendly staff can assist you with this simple process.
As ADHD is a chronic condition, you may also be eligible for a Chronic Condition Management Plan (Care Plan). This allows your ADHD consultations and ongoing management to be billed directly to Medicare, meaning there are no out-of-pocket costs to you for these visits.
